History of romantic type daggers

(ROMANTIC DAGGER By Main TRÉHARD) | Extract from the weapons gazette n°197, from February 1990.

Romanticism appeared in France under the Restoration and spread until the July Monarchy. Predominant current of artistic and literary life during the end of the 18th and 19th centuries is different depending on the country, but it has a certain number of common features everywhere: rejection of imitation of the Ancients and the rules of classicism, birth of a new mode of sensitivity, individualistic expression going as far as sentimental outpouring. Romanticism, at least in its first phase, is characterized by a passionate subjectivity which leads the artist to give free rein to the communication of his feelings, thus tending to deify nature, to make a return to legendary sources, to folklore , with a deep taste for all kinds of scenery, both in time (rediscovery of the Middle Ages) and in space (exoticism, craze for the Orient, attachment to modern Greece, etc.). Enigmatic works of anonymous artists, we cannot approach the field of romantic daggers by speaking in generalities, simply because these weapons do not take into account any rules regarding their creation or their form...
