The sabre model 1821 was proposed as early as 1817, but was not adopted until July 31, 1821 by Marshal Victor, hence its name. It was used by infantry officers until 1845, when the new model 1845 was adopted, then was adopted again in 1854 by the non-commissioned officers of the Imperial Guard of Napoleon III, undergoing some changes. After 1870, it was still worn by non-commissioned officers of military justice. There are also several variants, for example for the National Guard, the Royal Guard, and for student officers of military schools (with the mention "given by the King.
