The painting in question, signed by Mce Jouhan in 1926, represents an emblematic scene from the legend of the temptation of Saint Hubert of Hérouard, done in watercolor. This work retraces a significant episode in the life of Saint Hubert, who, according to legend, experienced a moment of divine revelation in the forests of the Ardennes after leaving the court following the death of his wife in childbirth. Deeply saddened by this loss, Hubert is said to have withdrawn into the forest, devoting himself exclusively to hunting. Another version of the legend tells that, on a Good Friday, while the other faithful were in church, Hubert was hunting in the forest. It was while he was chasing a majestic deer that the latter suddenly turned around, revealing a crucifix floating between its antlers. Hubert was amazed and heard a heavenly voice address these words to him: “Hubert, if you do not turn to the Lord and lead a holy life, you will quickly descend into hell.” Humiliated and terrified, Hubert dismounted and prostrated himself, imploring: “Lord, what do you want me to do?” The voice replied: “Seek Lambert, he will instruct you.” This founding episode is taken from a legendary hagiography of the 15th century, which links the figure of Saint Hubert to that of Saint Eustace, to whom a similar vision had been attributed. The image of the stag carrying a crucifix has become the symbol of Saint Hubert’s miraculous conversion and an integral part of his legend. Mce Jouhan’s painting not only captures a mythical moment, it also reflects the religious beliefs and values of the time, as well as the importance of nature in the mystical imagination. The work thus becomes a bridge between the sacred and the wild, and bears witness to the profound impact that these stories have had on religious and artistic culture. This painting was made from the article published in "La Vie Parisienne" on October 24, 1925 No. 43. Beautiful representation of Saint Hubert, ideal gift for hunters and lovers of medieval style.
