The Austrian Empire (German: Kaisertum Österreich) was the official name for the entire territory under Austrian rule from 1804 to 1867. The empire previously existed, de facto, as a collection of possessions of the Habsburgs of Austria, but de jure, the western part was a component of the Holy Roman Empire while the eastern part consisted of several separate kingdoms, principalities and duchies. In 1804, Francis I took the title of Emperor of Austria and had to abandon that of Holy Roman Emperor in 1806. The Austrian defeat at the end of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 led the following year to the transformation of the empire into a dual monarchy called Austria-Hungary.
