HISTORICAL CONTEXT:
The boarding sword is an offensive bladed weapon used in the Navy1. It is a type of short saber with a thick blade, serving as both a weapon and a tool (for cutting ropes, for example).
During the 19th century, the Navy's regulation boarding swords adopted a shell guard, which led to their nickname "pot spoon". They are probably the origin of the expression "to settle things in two strokes of a pot spoon".
