Description

Historical Context:

The Nimcha, from the Arabic Nim (half), etymologically refers to a short weapon (like a naval weapon), although its length is indeed that of a saber. It is the saber of the Berber horsemen of the Middle Atlas, whose spread to southern Spain and northern Algeria was ensured by conquests and trade contacts with the Berber empires of Morocco. It is a saber (sword) typical of the Amazigh tribes of the Middle Atlas in Morocco, which allowed for superior control of the wrist combined with impressive cutting power. The Nimcha offers excellent wrist and hand protection, making it highly valued by both horsemen and foot soldiers. The Salé pirates also adopted it in an identical but shortened version. The hilt is generally canine-shaped, the blade is slightly curved with one, two, or even three hollows called fullers.
