Description

Historical context:

Louis XVI declared the new Assembly worthless but allowed it to sit without openly intervening. On May 25, French Guards marched in Paris in support of the rebellious deputies and the Parisian electors gathered in assembly. But, on the 26th, marching orders were issued to six regiments and a troop of about 20,000 men, a "veritable small army" that was called to the outskirts of the capital to maintain order in Paris and Versailles. However, the entire Parisian population was agitated: the bourgeoisie feared for the survival of the Assembly; the people, for their part, feared that the troops would cut off the supply routes of the Parisians while the price of bread was at its highest. In early July, riots broke out at the toll barriers. The king dismissed his ministers considered too liberal, including Necker, Controller of Finances, dismissed on July 11 and invited to leave the Kingdom.

History of the model:

Montmorency sabers from the end of the reign of Louis XVI, there are single-branched sabers of this type and as there were no regulations at the time, private furnishers worked according to the whim and financial means of the head of the corps, for troop weapons or of the officer for his personal saber. This explains the differences in quality in the materials used, in the chiseling and decoration. This model will still be used after the revolution. The saber here was made like this, without a guard. However, during this period, sabers with a guard had to be adapted to look like the model on this ad.
