(ROMANTIC DAGGERS By Main TRÉHARD) | Excerpt from the Gazette des armes n°197, February 1990.
Romanticism appeared in France under the Restoration and spread until the July Monarchy. The predominant current of artistic and literary life during the late 18th and 19th centuries differs from country to country, but it has a certain number of common features everywhere: rejection of the imitation of the Ancients and the rules of classicism, birth of a new mode of sensitivity, individualistic expression going as far as sentimental outpouring. Romanticism, at least in its early phase, is characterized by a passionate subjectivity which leads the artist to give free rein to the communication of his feelings, thus tending to divinize nature, to operate a return to legendary sources, to folklore, to the deep taste for all changes of scenery, both in time (rediscovery of the Middle Ages) and in space (exoticism, craze for the Orient, attachment to modern Greece, etc.). Enigmatic works by anonymous artists, we cannot approach the field of romantic daggers by speaking in generalities, simply because these weapons do not take into account any rules as to their realization or their form...
