The Royal Navy only became a permanent war fleet in the mid-17th century and developed from the British financial revolution. It has experienced many feats of arms during its history, such as its self-proclaimed victory against the Invincible Armada in 1588 and its success at the Battle of La Hogue in 1692 against the French Navy. Taking advantage of the financial mobilization after the Glorious Revolution, it fully established its supremacy from the 18th century onwards, despite a few rare defeats, against Spain at the Battle of Cartagena de Indias in 1741 for example, or against France at the Battle of Chesapeake Bay. After the beginning of the 19th century and the Battle of Trafalgar, the domination of the British Navy over the world's oceans could no longer be challenged by any power until the First World War.
