Before he acceded to the throne of Belgium, Leopold II, who was then Duke of Brabant, was already interested in the idea of colonization. He dreamed of seeing Belgium, a country of modest size, certainly, but with technical and economic capacities, take an interest in overseas territories that could contribute to enhancing its commercial capacities, provide it with access to raw materials and products of the land that it did not have, or serve as an outlet for those - many at the time - who lived in poverty in Belgium.

Very rare and superb Belgian saber, based on the French officer's model, dating from the colonial period under Leopold II. The handle is made of bronze and wood, very solid, filigree missing, no play. The blade is in superb condition, still shiny, marked: '' MANUFACTURE D'ÉQUIPEMENT MILITAIRE AUGUSTE FONSON BRUXELLES ''. Leather scabbard and chrome-plated bronze fittings (?)! Very beautiful piece, pleasant to hold in the hand and even more pleasant to admire in a display case. Superb saber that has still kept its period shine! Very rare in this condition and 100% original, to seize urgently!!!
