The origin of the Italian Navy goes back to that of the Savoyard navy which was hardly developed due to the enclosure of the Duchy of Savoy. Of course, the ancient maritime republics, duly remembered in its current flag, have a much older and more developed tradition than that of landlocked Savoy. It was only with the acquisition of the Kingdom of Sardinia that this State had to protect its coasts, between Nice, Oneille and Loano and distant Sardinia, in particular from Moorish attacks, most of the time in the form of acts of piracy.
