HISTORICAL CONTEXT :



Bayonet Mle 86 (1886). Called “Lebel” after the manufacturer of the rifle. She will also be colloquially called “Rosalie”. It is a sword-bayonet type weapon, with a straight blade, having four hollow sections of cruciform section with a short non-hollowed heel with a length of 52 cm. Intended to be placed under the barrel (this was a novelty at the time) the nickel silver handle and the attachment to the rifle were of a new design. The handle has a quillon curved towards the blade. The blade is held to the handle by the screw limiting the movement of the ferrule and by a rivet at the heel.

As for the nickname "Rosalie", invented by the singers in the vein of the comic trouper, it was very moderately used by the Poilus. You have to be a public entertainer from the rear to imagine that the infantryman considers his bayonet as a companion and gives him an affectionate nickname accordingly."

Very beautiful French Lebel / Rosalie type dagger/bayonet. Light metal handle. The blade has the markings ''B & C'' in a circle, other markings may be visible after cleaning... The blade is in good condition, still shiny, in its juice. The scabbard still has its black paint as well as its small fixing rivet with traces due to time. Crack at the rivet (Photo No. 7), at the top of the handle, bayonet which was probably in the trenches of WW1. Original leather, some small gaps, it has the merit of being there, almost impossible to find these days!!! Very beautiful and rare bayonet saber, completely homogeneous, in its original condition. Also in force in the French and colonial army during WW1. Very pleasant to hold and just delicious when displayed in a window, a real gem! Really very rare in this condition!!! Very rare and 100% original!!!
