Khokhloma crafts are a traditional Russian art from the Nizhny Novgorod region and whose origins date back several centuries (half of the 17th century). It takes its name from the small village of Khokhloma, on the banks of the Volga. It is above all a peasant craft, combining the useful with the pleasant. A little Russian soul in the beauty of these small, simple objects of everyday life among Old Believer peasants.
Khokhloma objects are made of painted and lacquered wood. Basically, they are everyday objects: kitchen utensils, dishes and small pieces of furniture. They are richly decorated with floral motifs and fruits such as strawberries, wild berries or various berries.
The dominant colors are clearly red, gold, green and black, another easily recognizable trademark of Khokhloma.
The objects are lacquered several times before being heated in a low oven for several hours, which gives the shiny, almost metallic side of these wooden objects.
