SUZANNE TOURTE (French 1904-1979) Suzanne Tourte is a French painter, engraver, medalist, fresco artist, lithographer and illustrator born in 1904. She was also an excellent musician (singing). TRAINING Suzanne Tourte was born in Champagne, in Cormontreuil, but she spent part of her childhood in Paris, to flee the war which ravaged her native country. Once the war was over, she attended the Beaux-Arts courses in Reims, while continuing her musical studies at the Conservatoire de la Ville. She chooses painting as a profession and returns to Paris to continue her studies. She brilliantly finishes Decorative Arts, then Fine Arts, in the class of the painter Simon. She befriends Yves Brayer, Humblot and Despierre. TRAVELS Suzanne Tourte began her career as a landscape painter and made numerous study trips, the first to Germany. She already paints with a very personal style, full of vigor, but remains faithful to realism. In 1932, Suzanne Tourte received the Florence-Blumenthal Foundation Prize, which consisted of a travel grant in Czechoslovakia. The artist then exhibited in Prague, in the premises of the Institut Français Ernest Denis, the lithographs, watercolors, drawings and canvases from his stay in Slovakia. In 1938, she was invited by the Director of Polish Artistic Propaganda to come and stay in Poland. She exhibits in Warsaw the result of her trip. THE WINDINGS In 1940, Suzanne Tourte had an important solo exhibition at the Wildenstein gallery. She changes her signature. She puts an X before her name, the X being the initial of her friend Xavier, whom she remembers in this way. She uses a very vivid palette, surrounding her subjects with thick lines of color. It is the beginning of an important stylistic evolution The figures are circled by curves at first, then Tourte evolves and continues these curves by winding them on themselves In 1946, she frescoed the chapel of Notre-Dame de Tous Powers, in Langogne (Lozère). GEOMETRISM In the 1950s, this emphasis on the subject by curves led it to a more geometric representation, marked by the straight line. Tourte moves further and further away from a faithful representation of reality and treats the subject using acute angles and geometric planes. She regularly exhibits at various exhibitions, be it the Salon d'Automne or the Salon des Indépendants, as well as the Salon de la peinture à l'eau or the Salon des painter-engravers. It acquired international fame thanks to special exhibitions (Amsterdam in 1952, etc.) THE SERENE PERIDOD Around 1954, it returned to a stylistic way closer to reality, with a more sober palette, which we described as serene. She then exhibited at the Salon de la Marine (1955), in Reims and in Troyes and strengthened her reputation internationally with the success of her personal exhibition in Brussels (1958). She is made a knight of the Legion of Honor and receives the silver medal of the City of Paris (1960). Suzanne Tourte died destitute in Argenteuil on April 18, 1979. She is buried in the cemetery of her native town, which paid for the costs of the burial. In 1980, an exhibition was organized in homage to his work in the National Galleries of the Grand Palais. His works are kept in public collections, notably at the Musée d'art moderne de la ville de Paris, Musée du Petit Palais and Musée Carnavalet, as well as at the museums of Boston, New York (MET), Prague and Warsaw. The photos are an integral part of the description.Dimensions: PaintingHeight: 31 cmWidth: 45 cmFrameHeight: 49 cmThickness: 5.5 cmWidth: 61.5 cmP: 650 335 S: G1R36Q8QS: SQ49SHV5 I remain at your disposal for any questions.
