The French Air Force is the oldest air force in the world. The first five squadrons were created in early 1912 and were then dependent on the French Army. The Air Force became a fully-fledged army on July 2, 1934.
As of July 1, 2019, 40,800 military personnel and 5,200 civilians serve in its ranks2. It totals 170,000 flight hours per year. Its annual budget is 7.5 billion euros in 2020, or 20% of the budget of the Ministry of the Armed Forces.
It is the 8th largest air force in the world and the 1st in Western Europe. She also has extensive combat experience
