The National Gendarmerie is one of the oldest French institutions. Indeed, it is the heir of the Marechaussee, a body of soldiers which, responsible for policing and justice for the armies since the Middle Ages, gradually became a competent police force for the entire population over almost entire French territory. It retained powers of extraordinary justice (called “provostal”) until the Revolution.
In 1720, the Marechaussee was symbolically placed under the administrative authority of the Gendarmerie de France, a heavy cavalry corps assimilated to the king's military household, which was dissolved on April 1, 1788, and in 1791 the National Assembly, which did not wish not retaining the name Maréhaussee, too linked to the Ancien Régime, gave it the name “National Gendarmerie”.
Police force with military status, mainly responsible for security in rural and peri-urban areas, it is deployed in all mainland and overseas territories. In the 21st century, its area of responsibility covers 95% of the national territory. and 55% of the French population. It has also been involved alongside the French armies from the Revolutionary Wars to the crises of the 21st century.
In 1941, a national monument was built in Versailles, Place de la Loi, to pay tribute to the National Gendarmerie.
