Group or English Figure from Staffordshire representing hooded 'Robin Hood', accompanied by another warrior and a dog.
On closer inspection, we see a faint "Robinhood" inscription on the base marked in gold.
This is an antique Victorian style figurine group of Robin Hood, Little John and a dog flanking a tree vase.
Made of fine English earthenware (white-paste ceramic, very fine and covered with a transparent lead glaze), from the Victorian era also featuring this characteristic: no signature, even under the sets!
A piece, therefore, very popular and sought after by fine collectors, very rare to find in such condition...
( Staffordshire figurines were made specifically for home display, hence their "flatback" design (flat back); The technique for this type of "flatback" appeared in the 1830s through the use of press molding.
A "master copy" was created in order to then be able to provide a mold for the following products.
From "bourgeois" this achievement then became almost "iconic" both of the manufacture and of the character...
Some will present it to you as a vase, others as a match holder, the interpretations differ, the rarity persists!!! )
Features :
dimensions: 36 x 23 x 10 cm
weight: 2100 grams
condition: very good condition, left as is with 'its' dust to avoid any manipulation, some colors (gold) slightly faded over time, no knocks or cracks to report.
origin: from a private collection
period: early 17th century
manufacture: fine earthenware from Staffordshire
Style: Victorian
circa: 1850
