Superb glazed speckled sandstone coffee maker (also inside) bearing the monogram of Robert Picault (1910-2000) It is one of the so-called utilitarian pieces.
This famous ceramist, a former student of the School of Applied Arts in Paris, created the CALLIS workshop in Vallauris (city of potters) in 1946 with Roger Capron and Jean Derval. He was Picasso's friend. Robert Picault renewed culinary ceramics by modernizing traditional local forms.
In 1948, he opened his own workshop in Vallauris. It is growing, its productions are sold in department stores. In 1962, he founded another factory in Sardinia. He also makes table services for the Longchamps faience factory.
The personal pieces are signed in full Picault until 1962: these unique works are decorated with birds, fish and women. He also created stunning metallic matte black pieces.
Its other decorations are very identifiable thanks to its geometric shapes and its lines in green or brown tones.
Then there are the simple, unadorned ceramics, such as the one shown here.
