The Risorgimento (Italian word meaning "resurgence" or "rebirth" from the verb risorgere "to resurface", or in French "resurrection" or better "resurgence", in a real and figurative sense), or Italian unification, is the period of history of Italy in the second half of the 19th century at the end of which the kings of the house of Savoy unified most of the Italian geographical region through the annexation of the kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, the kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Duchy of Modena and Reggio, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Duchy of Parma and the Papal States in the Kingdom of Sardinia.
