In Argentina, Uruguay and southern Brazil, the gaucho refers to a herder of herds of the South American plains (the pampas), as well as in Paraguay, southeastern Bolivia (Tarija) and southern Chile. In Brazil, the term is at the origin of the gentile gaúcho, which is used to designate the inhabitants of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The etymology of this term would have its origin in the Quechua language huacchu ("orphan, solitary"), or in the caló (gypsy, Spanish bohemian) gacho ("peasant, lover"). In Chile, we will more readily speak of huaso.
The companion of the gaucho is called gaucha (or china). As good a horsewoman as he is, she is the one who takes care of growing the cereals (wheat and corn), the watermelons, the onions, of baking the bread in the oven, and of weaving the ponchos of her companion. In terms of clothing, she can be recognized by the shirt she wears over an undergarment, matched with a loose and long fringed dress, as well as a cotton scarf. Her hairstyle is most often made of two braids.
The gaucho is notably honored in Argentina on December 6, on the occasion of the "National Gaucho Day" (DÃa Nacional del Gaucho).
