Description

Historical context :

The British Army during the First World War faced the largest and most costly fight in its long history. At the start of the conflict, its fighters were composed exclusively of volunteers until 1916, unlike the French and German armies composed mainly of conscripts. Additionally, the British army was considerably smaller than the latter two.

During the war there were three separate British armies. The “first” was made up of the small contingent of volunteers, numbering 400,000 soldiers, more than half of whom were garrisoned overseas in the British Empire. This total included the regular army and the Territorial Force reservists. Together they formed the British Expeditionary Force, which had been formed for service in France and became better known as the Old Contemptibles. The "second" army was Kitchener's Army, formed by volunteers in 1914-1915 and intended to fight in the Battle of the Somme.
