Description

Historical background:

The British Army in the First World War was the largest and most costly battle in its long history. At the start of the conflict, its fighting force was composed entirely of volunteers until 1916, unlike the French and German armies, which were composed mainly of conscripts. Furthermore, the British Army was considerably smaller than the latter two.

During the war, there were three separate British armies. The "First" consisted of the small volunteer contingent, 400,000 strong, more than half of whom were stationed overseas in the British Empire. This total included the regular army and the reservists of the Territorial Force. Together, they formed the British Expeditionary Force, which had been formed for service in France and became better known as the Old Contemptibles. The "second" army was the Kitchener's Army, formed by volunteers in 1914-1915 and destined to fight in the Battle of the Somme.
