Rare Book DAVID COPPERFIELD Charles DICKENS 1st series 1924 GEDALCE PARIS. David Copperfield or The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger (abbreviated to David Copperfield is the eighth novel by Charles Dickens and the first by this author to feature a first-person narrator. Adopted by William Loder Browne and his wife Katherine, he is the ninth son in this middle-class family that will include ten boys and five girls. He is in fact the illegitimate child of their eldest daughter and a certain Nicolas Hablot, of the Imperial Guard of Napoleon I, hence his unconventional first name. When the child was only seven years old, his adoptive father left England to 'settled in the United States where he died in 1855 in Philadelphia. The young Hablot having kept only few memories of William Browne, it was Nicolas Hablot's brother-in-law, Elhanan Bicknell, a self-taught businessman and collector, in particular works of J. M. W.
