The infantry officer's sabre model 1882 is a French sabre, adopted in 1882 by the Artillery Service for senior and junior infantry officers.
The inspiration for the 1882 model comes from the infantry fantasy sabre of the African army. This model devotes the scabbard attachment system to a single bail, which has become a standard: it is the first sabre model that only has one original bail.
The original sabre is quite simple, which pushes many officers to have "fantasy" models made, keeping the standard blade, but modifying the mount (number of branches, various metals, etc.)2.
This model had its glory days during the 1914-18 war. It was worn by officers in their dress uniform until August 13, 1925, when it was repealed. It was now worn by officer cadets at the National School of Firefighter Officers.
Unlike the 1845 model for junior infantry officers, which had a corresponding model for senior officers, the 1882 infantry officer sabre was standard issue for all infantry officers, juniors and seniors. You can even find standard 1882 models bearing the general's stars on the beak of the plate.
