The Royal Navy did not become a permanent war fleet until the mid-17th century and developed from the British financial revolution. It has experienced numerous feats of arms during its history, such as its self-proclaimed victory against the Invincible Armada in 1588 and its success at the Battle of La Hougue in 1692 which pitted it against the French Navy. Taking advantage of the financial mobilization after the Glorious Revolution, it fully established its supremacy from the 18th century, despite a few rare defeats, against Spain at the Battle of Cartagena de Indias in 1741 for example, or against France at the Battle of the Chesapeake Bay. After the start of the 19th century and the Battle of Trafalgar, the British navy's domination of the world's oceans could no longer be challenged by any power until the First World War.
