Pierre Louis Antoine Gatier, born in Toulon on January 12, 1878, and died in Joigny (Yonne) on October 15, 1944, is a French painter and engraver.Pierre Gatier follows an artistic training at the School of Fine Arts in Toulon, then at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris where he studied with Joseph Blanc, then Fernand Cormon, celebrating Parisian life during the Belle Époque in his works and exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1903 to 1907 . He is not interested in the monuments of the city, but in the life s ocial of popular places (Champs-Élysées, rue de la Paix, Longchamp racecourse, etc.). On March 30, 1907, he was appointed official painter of the Navy: he then produced views of Toulon and its surroundings, and reports on various news such as the Sinking of the Kniaz Suvorov at the Russo-Japanese battle of Tsushima.After World War I, he moved to Parmain (Val-d'Oise), but the 1929 crisis forced him to give up temporarily painting and to return to Toulon where he worked in 1931 on the camouflage of the coastal structures of the Navy, in particular on the island of Porquerolles. He participated in the Universal Exhibition of 1937 in Paris where he decorated the Palais de l'Air.
