"This book is not an autobiography, nor a memoir. It is only a humble testimony, the story of an improbable journey that the passage of time has made me want to share. My story began in tragic conditions and continued in barbarity. I experienced poverty, the brutality of sick parents, social despair. Poverty nourished my childhood and adolescence.
It also made me a man. I grew up in a hut without water or electricity, deep in the Landes forest, sharing my daily life with my alcoholic mother and her violent companions. To save myself, I had to leave this hell, alone. I started working very young, first as a street sweeper, then as a mechanic, before climbing the ladder one by one. My success is not having become CEO.
It is having never given up, having continued to learn and build myself despite adversity, then having helped others to achieve. It is also having had the intuition, precisely because of my candor, of an innovative project: certain radioactive metals from the factory where I worked could help fight cancer. This idea, which no one had had before me, is perhaps on the verge of revolutionizing what is called radioimmunotherapy, a very promising targeted therapy to fight the disease.
I sometimes pass for an idealist, but the fact is that some of my dreams are coming true. And since nothing is ever a foregone conclusion, perhaps this story is only just beginning." P. B. Patrick Bourdet knows that he owes a lot to all those who believed in him and allowed him to leave the hell of the cabin. But what is striking in his story is his audacity and his never-ending capacity to dream. The story of an incredible rise outside of any academic path, such as France knows too few of.
