PASTEL ON CANVAS PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN BY GABRIEL DURAND 1851 OVAL FRAME A4327 This work is a pastel on canvas made by Gabriel Durand, it is all original nature untouched. In a fairly good state of preservation it bears the signature Gabriel Durand 1851. Hairdresser-barber until the age of 38, Gabriel Durand first practiced painting as an amateur, distinguished himself as a pastellist. From 1847, he occasionally sent canvases to the Paris Salon, among which dominated female portraits. Durand was also active in his hometown, and became a regular exhibitor at the Fine Arts, Industry and even the very young Union Artistique de Toulouse fairs, which did much to increase the influence of southern artists from 1860. The practice of pastel portraits, which experienced a revival in the middle of the 19th century, enabled Gabriel Durand to establish himself in Toulouse's good society under Napoleon III. It represents a typical middle-class woman in the mid-19th century, seated on an armchair in a rich toilet. The glass is original the frame is original, the photos are difficult to take with this glass, we point out that the frame has gaps around the perimeter, friction and traces also, some small friction and small dots on the pastel especially above the signature but really very light.
