Description

Oil painting on framed panel depicting the Bridge of Sighs in Venice. Under the Bridge of Sighs, there are 2 gondolas passing by. This reminds us of the passing of time in an environment full of beauty and poetry. It is signed lower right G. Philippson. The painting is well framed. The Bridge of Sighs is not only a remarkable architectural work, but it is also surrounded by romantic and historical legends that make it a must-see for visitors to Venice. The Bridge of Sighs connects the Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) to the famous Prison of the Leads (Prigioni Nuove) in Venice. It crosses the Rio di Palazzo, a small canal. The bridge is a magnificent example of Venetian Renaissance architecture. It is mainly built of white Istrian stone and is characterized by its elegant style and decorative ornaments. The Bridge of Sighs was built in the early 17th century, between 1600 and 1603, during the reign of Doge Marino Grimani. It was designed by architect Antonio Contin and has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Venice. The name "Bridge of Sighs" comes from the romantic belief that prisoners would sigh as they looked out of the bridge's barred windows, seeing the beautiful Venice for the last time before being imprisoned. The Bridge of Sighs had a practical function at the time it was built. It served as a passageway to connect the palace where the courts and administrative offices of the Doge's Palace were located to the nearby prison. It was also used to secretly transfer prisoners from one bank of the canal to the other.
