OIL ON CANVAS STILL LIFE WITH FRUIT BY MANUEL THOMSON ORTIZ (1875 -?) CONCARNEAU 1908 M129 This oil on canvas is a still life by Manuel Thomson Ortiz. Manuel Thomson Ortiz, painter. Born in Valparaiso in 1875. Died in Paris in 1953. Son of Manuel Tomás Thomson Puerto Mariño, hero of the Pacific War, he was orphaned at the age of five. Still a teenager, he entered the School of Fine Arts where he studied with Juan Mochi and Cosme San Martin. His great ability and talent made him triumph in official salons, appearing on the first prize list since 1894. In 1902, the Chilean government granted him a scholarship to study art in Paris. He was a pupil of the master Jean-Paul Laurens and from that moment his work presented great changes which reflected his improvement and the influence of French plastic movements. He succeeded in the difficult European environment and was able to maintain himself. It represents a still life of fruit, three apples of different colors.
