In the background we can see a mountainous landscape. Born in 1880 in Draguignan, Pierre Magnan-Bernard moved to Paris to devote himself to painting. He was a pupil of Gabriel Ferrier and François Flameng at the Académie Julian, and also frequented the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme. Member of the Society of French Artists, he received a Gold medal at the Salon of 1928, and the Rougé prize the following year. The coasts of Provence, but also the wild landscapes of the island of Bréhat, had nourished the inspiration of Magnan-Bernard. In line with the great classical masters, the painter distinguished himself with Virgilian compositions, populating an untamed nature with bathers, naiads and shepherds.
