Oil on canvas by Frans Mase, real 1930 Grotesque-looking subject A5003This work was produced by Frans Mase, real in 1930. It bears the monogram FM and an inscription on the back. The subject is probably inspired by Quasimodo. The touch is good, typical of the work of real Frans Mase. Born in 1889, Frans Mase Réel is a Belgian artist, strongly marked by the two world wars. Pacifist, anti-militarist, humanist, he frequented the European intelligentsia of the interwar period, illustrating with his inimitable style texts by Emile Zola, Stefan Zweig, Thomas Mann… Friend of the German painter George Grosz, he began to publish his “ novels in engraving” in 1918, in Switzerland, and will not cease, until his death in 1972, to use wood engraving as a privileged means of expression.
