"The Japy family is a French industrial dynasty originating from Beaucourt in the Territoire de Belfort. It had the second largest French company, in terms of capital, during the Second Empire. Its influential members left their mark on the French industrial landscape through the contribution of numerous innovations, particularly in the field of watchmaking, typewriters and pumps, but also in the organization of work and workers' social life in the 19th century. . It all started with a small workshop founded in 1777 by Frédéric Japy, where he renews and mechanizes the traditional establishment process practiced in the Jura by the watchmaking profession. From the watch movement, Japy switched to clocks and diversified into tools, motors, bicycle parts, lighting, garden furniture, pumps1, coffee grinders, typewriters, etc. The 1880s marked Japy's golden age. Nearly 5,000 workers work in Japy factories in the region. The family had thirteen castles built in Beaucourt and Dasle, four have disappeared. In 1904, the Japy de Beaucourt company was the main shareholder in the coal exploration company between Montbéliard and Villersexel, which launched mining prospecting in the south of the Saint-Etienne-sous-Vosgien coal basin. After the digging of a positive borehole in Lomont, a concession of 2,336 ha is granted to this company for the exploitation of a coal deposit extending to the south of the Arthur-de-Buyer well, operated by the Ronchamp coal mines. . But there was no coal mining2,3. In 1921, part of the capital escaped the family by issuing bonds to the public. From 1930 to 1935, a serious crisis raged throughout France, unemployment spread, business became difficult, manufacturing and sales were in decline. The board of directors decided on the complete reorganization of all departments, the Badevel factory was abandoned in 1933, and watchmaking was centralized in Beaucourt. The Japy company successfully launched typewriters in Europe at the start of the 20th century, but lost its dominance over industrial innovation. The Japy company, although widely diversified, was gradually dismantled with the sale of various branches of the brand. Conflicts of interest and of persons between the Japy family and the partners lead to the break-up of the company into four independent companies. In 1979, the last Japy company was put into liquidation. The Frédéric Japy museum, opened in 1986, installed in the old watchmaking workshops, brings back to life an entire industrial era, it retraces the epic of the Japy dynasty. The collections attempt to reflect the industrialization of the watchmaking sector and the development and diversification strategies of a company which, from a simple manufacture in 1777, would become the second most important French industrial concentration under the Second Empire.
