Caltagirone ceramic Moorish heads
The story of the Moorish heads comes to life around the year 1000, at the height of Arab rule, in the Kalsa neighborhood of Palermo, where a young Sicilian woman spent her time on her balcony watering the plants.
One day, a young Moor passed by and, upon seeing her, he fell madly in love with her and the young girl returned the favor.
But the young man hid a secret: on the other side of the sea, a woman and children were waiting for his return, and once he was discovered, the young girl, in a fit of jealousy, killed him by decapitating him. .
To keep him always with her, the young girl put his head inside a vase, planting basil there which, watered with her tears, became so luxuriant that it aroused the curiosity of the neighbors. They therefore had local craftsmen make vases with the same characteristics as that of the young girl.
