Lucjan Mianowski Poland Painter, graphic artist and photographer whose works oscillate between the styles of expressionism and grotesque, surrealism, the informal and pop art of the 50s and 60s. Based in Poznań and Krakow, traveling around the world to find inspiration. Born February 2, 1933, died in 2009 in Poznań. Lucjan Mianowski was one of the most important and fascinating Polish graphic artists of the second half of the 20th century. He graduated with honors from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow in 1956. He began exhibiting his works in Poland and later gained recognition abroad. In 1957, he received first prize for a graphic design from the Warsaw Arsenal Gallery, which then presented the Polish avant-garde. In 1959 he received a scholarship from the French government which allowed him to study at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the lithography workshop directed by Professor Pierre Clairin, where he studied between 1959 and 1960 and 1963 and 1964. Between 1964 and In 1965 he traveled to Scandinavia and then in 1967 to Algeria and France. His travels opened him up to the latest artistic developments from around the world and to the growing influence of mass culture on the arts, becoming one of the first Polish artists to experiment with pop art. Upon his return to Poland he was appointed head of the lithographic workshop at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań.
