Description

Magnificent enamel of Our Blessed Mother The Virgin Mary with the child Jesus, signed "SM" lower right for Marguerite Sornin (1883-1974) and dates from around 1930.

This is a fine example of the quality of the enamel paintings produced at the beginning of the 20th century by the master enamellers of Limoges.
The stained glass windows of Bourges Cathedral are renowned throughout the world and rightly so because they are truly magnificent.
This wonderful enamel takes a detail from one of the windows and is beautifully done on curved copper.

A breathtaking piece in its technicality and beauty.
The piece is like new and its colors are shimmering.

Each color of these Limoges enamels must be applied separately then fired and then passed to the next color.
Enamels can require between 16 and 22 firings, a long and laborious process that must be done right the first time every time.
No wonder they are so sought after.

It is mounted on a linen base enhanced with an oak frame.
