Very large color engraving by Lucien Gauthier signed by the artist at the bottom right. It represents the Louvre seen from the Quays of the Seine. The quays of the Seine are animated. The work dates from the end of the 19th, beginning of the 20th. The engraving was enhanced with blue by the artist. Condition: small tear at the top left Size: 95cm x 65cm Lucien Marcellin Gautier was born on January 10, 1850 in Aix-en-Provence1. He was first a student of Gibert and Marius Reinaud in Aix-en-Provence, then of Léon Gaucherel in Paris. From 1875, he produced views of Marseille and the surrounding neighborhoods. He moved to Paris in 1883 and obtained a position at the police headquarters where he organized a photographic service. From 1881 to 1886, he worked as an illustrator for the magazine L'Art. He exhibited his etchings at the Salon des artistes français from 1880 to 1924. After a trip to Italy and Scotland, he presented Le Forum à Rome and Le Lac Lhomond enEcosse at the 1884 Salon, which earned him an honorable mention. Also an interpretive engraver, he received a 3rd class medal for Bergerie after Charles Jacque in 1894, a 2nd class medal for La Drague du pont Louis-Philippe in Paris in 1898, and a 1st class medal for Le Passeur after Corot and Vision Gothique, triptyque in 1912. In 1901, he received a commission from the State for the engraving of La Bataille de Hondschoote after Jules Dupré. He died in Aix-en-Provence on March 29, 1925.
