Description

Large 19th Century Biscuit Porcelain Statue of Joan of Arc. Height 53 cm. This piece is signed by the French sculptor, Nicolas LECORNEY, active around 1880, born in Gourgeon. His work is part of the artistic tradition of the Second Empire, which he exhibited mainly at the Salon between 1880 and 1884. At the beginning of the 15th century, this young girl of peasant origin claimed that she had received from Saints Michael, Margaret of Antioch and Catherine of Alexandria the mission of delivering France from English occupation. She managed to meet Charles VII, to victoriously lead the French troops against the English armies, to lift the siege of Orleans and to lead the king to the coronation in Reims, thus helping to reverse the course of the Hundred Years' War. Captured by the Burgundians at Compiègne in 1430, she was sold to the English by Jean de Luxembourg, Count of Ligny, for the sum of ten thousand pounds. She was burned alive in 1431 after a trial for heresy conducted by Pierre Cauchon, Bishop of Beauvais and former Rector of the University of Paris. Marred by numerous irregularities, this trial was ordered to be revised by Pope Calixtus III in 1455. A second trial was held which concluded, in 1456, that Joan was innocent and fully rehabilitated her. Thanks to these two trials, the minutes of which have been preserved, she is one of the best-known French figures of the Middle Ages. Beatified in 1909 and then canonized in 1920, Joan of Arc became one of the two secondary patron saints of France in 1922 by the apostolic letter Beata Maria Virgo in cælum Assumpta in gallicæ. Her national holiday was instituted by law in 1920 and set for the 2nd Sunday in May[1]. In many countries, she is a mythical personality who has inspired a multitude of literary, historical, musical, dramatic and cinematographic works.
