Jean Fougère is a French novelist, short story writer and essayist. He made his debut with a novel, Flo (1939), then published, after the war, an essay, Thomas Mann or the Seduction of Death (1947), which did not announce the pleasant, even droll, storyteller that he became in "Les Bovidae", "La Pouponnière", nor the fine psychologist of his short stories (Visite, Un cadeau utile), nor the satirical realist, who gave himself free rein, fiercely, in his novels (La Cour des miracles, 1955, Les Petits Messieurs, 1963, Les Nouveaux bovidés, 1966). He was vice-president of the Société des gens de lettres (1958-60), member of the juries of the ORTF (1961), columnist at Le Figaro, president of the jury of the Black Humor prizes (1987-2000) and won the 1968 grand prize of the Société des gens de lettres, the grand prize of the Short Story of the French Academy (1972), the prize of the Four Juries (1976).
