Born in 1921, Isa Smiler is known for his work as an Inuit sculptor, draftsman, writer and painter. He grew up in Inukjuak, then known as Port Harrison, located along the eastern shore of Hudson Bay in Nunavik, Canada. He lived there for most of his life. His sculptures and artwork are well known and are an important part of historical Inuit culture. They are in the permanent collections of several museums, including those held by the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
