Born into an old Nantes family by his mother, he will be very attached throughout his life to his Breton identity. He returned to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, where he became a pupil of Paul Deltombe, founder of the Salon d'Automne. He became friends with his classmates Paul Durivault, Jacques Philippe, Michel Noury and Laure Martin whom he married. In 1934, he founded the Independent Regional Group with Michel Noury, Paul Durivault and Jacques Philippe. It was in his workshop located "rue Petit-Pierre" (former rue de Nantes now disappeared, it was located on the site of the current Place Victor-Mangin), which gathered the Nantes artists who admired Matisse, Rouault, Dufy and Picasso, but loudly affirmed their Breton identity and their artistic independence. In 1936, Julien Lanoë became president of the Nantes Museum of Fine Arts. It sets up exhibitions with the aim of promoting living art, until 1970. Artists from Nantes (Maxime Maufra, Pierre Roy, Jean Gorin, Camille Bryen) are exhibited there, as well as artists living in Nantes : Paul Deltombe, Michel Noury, Henry Leray, Laure Martin ... In 1970, nine Nantes artists created the “Archipel” group. They are Jean Billecocq, Louis Ferrand, Jorj Morin, Dominique Chantreau, Maurice Cadou-Rocher, Arnault Saint-Loubert-Bié, Henry Leray, Laure Martin and Michel Noury.
