Description

Very large hanging representing the coat of arms of the city of Chauny, in the Aisne The coat of arms of the city of Chauny is azure with a golden tower, open, pierced and masoned in sable, accompanied by seven golden fleurs-de-lis, three on each side in pale and one in point. The coat of arms of Chauny is the illustration of its motto "LILIA CALNIACIS VALIDAE SUNT TURRIBUS ARCES" (the lilies are solid defenses for the towers of Chauny). CALNIACIS designates the ancient CALNIACUM of the itinerary of Antonine, the old name of Chauny. Nicknamed Chauny la vapeur in the 19th century because of its industrial development, the city was almost entirely dynamited by the Germans in 1917 as part of their strategic retreat to the Hindenburg Line.
