The model 1821 saber was proposed in 1817, but was only adopted on July 31, 1821 by Marshal Victor, hence its name. It was used by infantry officers until 1845, when the new 1845 model was adopted, then was adopted again in 1854 by the non-commissioned officers of Napoleon III's imperial guard, undergoing some changes. After 1870, it would still be worn by non-commissioned officers of the military justice system. There are also several variants, for example for the national guard, the royal guard, and for officer cadets of military schools (with the mention “given by the King.
