Biography In 1892, Eugène Martel left Revest-du-Bion to settle in Avignon and meet Pierre Grivolas, director of the school of fine arts, who admitted him into his studio. Quickly convinced of his gifts, the latter sent him to the École des beaux-arts de Paris in the workshop of Gustave Moreau 2. He became friends with Simon Bussy with whom he shared an apartment from 1892 to 1898, first at 24 rue de Visconti then at 41 rue Bourbon, on Île Saint-Louis. Their financial situation was precarious and Martel was later to confess that he shared the same pants with his friend, worn in turns, for official occasions 3. Returning to the Albion plateau in 1898, he expressed all his talents as a portraitist by sketching peasants and villagers of Haute-Provence 2. One of his rare landscapes dates from 1928, and is entitled La Porte du mistral. The Albion plateau is presented at the end of the afternoon, under an immense sky while the horizon is closed by the Ventoux 2 massif.
