*Henry Lemarié (1911-1991)
Miniaturist painter, calligrapher, born in Tours, student at the Beaux Arts in Paris from 1930 to 1936. He traveled, discovered Fra Angelico, then the Flemish painter Bruegel. He was very interested in manuscripts, Renaissance illuminations from the Tours school which would inspire him a lot.
He painted landscapes. Then he illustrated with the greatest talent the tales of Perrault, the fables of La Fontaine, the Thousand and One Nights, the writings of the greatest authors from Rabelais to Molière via Dickens or Mme de Sévigné and Alphonse Daudet. It was published in 1944.
He also represented with all his magic "The means of locomotion" and "The attelages of yesteryear" (carriages, carriages, phaetons and their horses, locomotives..) a series of illustrations completing "the small trades".
It must be said that Henry was born in the old post house of the royal mails!
He developed a new technique of color wood engravings with Jean Estrade, the director of the éditions d'Arts les Heures Claires.
His miniatures are fabulous, poetic, fine and magnificently colored!
His work is sought after and some are highly rated.

**What is a "coconut merchant"?
It was a small profession widespread in Paris and Brussels, which was born at the end of the 18th century. Very popular throughout the 19th century, coco was a refreshing drink obtained by macerating liquorice sticks in lemon water. It was sold in the streets, by these traveling merchants who carried a sheet metal fountain on their backs, they served it in cups attached to their belts. This activity disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century.
