He brilliantly portrayed the spirit of light comedy characteristic of the tastes and mores of French Regency society. Son of Robert Lancret (1645-1695), coachman then controller of the Porte Saint-Antoine, Nicolas was destined from a young age for the profession of intaglio engraver. To this end, he received his first lessons in drawing from his older brother, François-Joseph Lancret (1686-1752), who was a master engraver, for which he showed rare aptitude. He then got his parents to abandon his job as an engraver for painting.
