ENGRAVING DEDICATED TO MR LE MARQUIS DE MARIGNY PAINTED BY J VERNET GRAVE BY LJ CATHELIN H3290 This engraving is painted by J. Vernet. It is old no doubt, it is engraved by LJ Cathelin. It is unfortunately very rough as you can see. It is an authentic and old engraving, you have to accept the defects due to age.They are important: tears, traces, wear, friction, the many photos speak for itself.Joseph Vernet, born Claude Joseph Vernet in Avignon August 14, 1714, died in Paris on December 3, 1789, is a French painter, designer and engraver, famous for his seascapes. Claude Joseph Vernet was trained in the South West of France. Its masters are Louis René Vialy, Philippe Sauvan then Adrien Manglard. In 1734, Claude left for Rome to study the work of previous landscape painters and naval painters such as Le Lorrain, whose style and subjects can be found in Vernet's paintings. He built up a solid international network during this trip, and subsequently in Paris via the salons, the Royal Academy and the Masonic lodges. The cosmopolitan sociability that this network aroused allowed him to deploy his social talents to launch, deliberately as shown in his book of reason, the fashion of navies across Europe, in particular by skilfully exploiting the impact produced by the largest royal commission of paintings of the reign of Louis XV: that, in 1753, of twenty paintings ports of France.The British painter Gabriel Mathias (1719-1804) was a client of Joseph Vernet, he acquired several paintings from this artist, and bought some for others. gold ”if we are to believe Pierre-Jean Mariette.
