Jean-François Millet, born October 4, 1814 in the hamlet of Gruchy and died January 20, 1875 in Barbizon, was a 19th century French realist painter, pastel artist, engraver and draftsman, one of the founders of the school of Barbizon. He is famous in particular for his realistic rural and peasant scenes Jean-François Millet is the son of Jean Louis Nicolas Millet (originally from Saint-Germain-le-Gaillard) and Aimée Henriette Adélaïde Henry. He was born in Gruchy, a hamlet of Gréville-Hague, a commune integrated into the new French commune of La Hague since January 1, 2017. The eldest of a large family of peasants, a shepherd in his childhood and later a ploughman, he was brought up in an illuminated environment. In particular thanks to his uncle, a well-read priest1, he read the Bible, but also Montaigne, La Fontaine, Homer and Virgil, Shakespeare, Milton, Chateaubriand and Victor Hugo. For the state, we note small spots of oxidation, halos, pitting, slight crease of manipulative folding, lack, micro-tear... Our many photos allow you to appreciate the quality of the engraving.
