Léon Lhermitte was born in Picardy in 1844 into a cultivated but modest family. His father, a teacher, noticed his talent for drawing and encouraged him in this field. In 1863, Léon Lhermitte joined as a student the Special School of Drawing and Mathematics, known as “Petite École” (now the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris) under the teaching of Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran.
