Engraving representing a deer pushing a bell which unfolds in its middle. The lines are thick as if made with a very oily pencil, probably charcoal. At the bottom right, we can see the signature of the author “M. Genevoix”.
The animal, entirely in profile, is rather well built.
The engraving is undoubtedly inspired by "The Last Herd", a book by Maurice Genevoix which tells the story of a pikeman, a crewman who takes care of the pack and a red deer, the largest deer in 'Europe.
If it is this work that speaks to us, it is also because the publishers have gotten into the habit of illustrating the front cover with the subject of the novel: a deer. Furthermore, we know that Maurice Genevoix had prints made of which he is the author and which have the same subject.
